Trent Blakney Towing & Excavating 100, June 5/16
Jesse Thompson
After Mother Nature intervened on Saturday evening, the 2nd event of the season kicked off under sunny skies Sunday. Highlighting the afternoon was the Trent Blakney Towing & Excavating 100 for the Late Model Sportsman division.

Kicking off our features was the Leisure Days RV Bandolero division. Two weeks ago, it was Michael Cormier holding off Upper Onslow NS's Sam Rogers after 20 laps. Rogers had his work cut out for him and was able to get the job done by sweeping the heat and feature. Cormier finished a close 2nd with Josh Langille rounding off the top 3. Nathan Blackburn and Austin MacDonald both continued strings of top 5s. Sam Rogers and Josh Langille picked up 10 lap heat wins.

Mr Transmission Mini Stocks were up next, and much like Cassius Clark the night prior, Beaverbank, NS's Tim Webster started out front and ran away with the feature by over a straightaway. Multiple time Petty feature winners JR Lawson and defending track champion Mike Weagle rounded out the podium. Deep in the field, Rob Poirier of Irishtown swapped spots with Logan Power and Chantel Ackles as they battled for 4th with Poirier gaining the spot over Ackles. Webster and Lawson also picked up heat wins.

The Extreme Windows & Entrance Systems Street Stocks provided a wild race as Craig Ward rebounded from a spin late in the opening day feature to win the 30 lap affair. It had been Ward's first Petty feature win in Street Stocks. With a lap and a half to go, Nick Cudmore wheeled his beautiful Chevy II to a runner-up spot over former Mini Stock competitor Mike Edwards. Shawn Lewis brought the Medicine Shop #92 home 4th and Tim Layton rebounded from a spin to come home 5th. Mechanical issues plagued opening day winner Mike Duskey of Albany, PE, who was relegated to 7th. Scotia Speedworld Truck competitor Jamie Creamer had a strong run to finish 6th. Mike Edwards captured the lone heat win.

For the first time this season, the Women On Wheels hit the track for a wild and unpredictable 15 lap feature. Ellen Smith, wife of 6 time Pro Stock champion Wayne Smith, looked to be the car to beat in her #76 PT Cruiser dubbed “Hubba Bubba” until a spin late in the event relegated her to a 6th place run. This opened the door for Halifax's Ashley Campbell to etch her name into history as the first Women On Wheels feature winner. Sister of Wayne Smith, Brenda Shortell held on for 2nd with an excited Sherry Mackenzie finishing 3rd. Paula Evans held on for 4th with Janet McFetridge rebounding from a near wreck to cap off the top 5. Roxanne Jeffery rounded out the field as she celebrated a birthday at the track.

This was also the first visit of the season for the Atlantic Modified Tour. 4-time series champion Mike Raeburn worked his way through the field methodically to check off another victory in his first start of the season. 2011 series champion Joe Hoyt came home 2nd, despite a sideways race car at the stripe and heat winner Mike Phillips brought his currently-for-sale #42 home third. Justin Beers, who kicked off their season at Speedway Miramichi with a victory came 4th with Mervyn Lemon and Kevin Bailey rounding out the field.

Finishing off the afternoon was the Trent Blakney Towing & Excavating 100 for the Late Model Sportsman division. Much like two weeks ago, Andrew Rodgers and Luc Bourgeois both had strong runs but in the end were no match for “The Bounty Hunter” Russell Smith Jr of Lakeside, NS. Smith took the lead on lap 10 and held off furious charges to win in what he announced was a limited schedule. Bourgeois came home 2nd with Dawson McIntee wheeling his #19 to third without power steering. Andrew Rodgers made a late race pit stop and fought lap traffic to come home 4th. Kenny Mackenzie Jr was scheduled to start on the pole, but faced starter issues and was forced to start shotgun on the grid. Following a couple spins, the Salisbury driver rounded out the top 5. 13 cars started the event with 4 cautions slowing the 100 lapper.

The next event will feature a visit from the Parts For Trucks Pro Stock Tour on June 25 at 6PM along with the Mini Stocks, Bandoleros and Street Stocks. For more information visit our schedule section or head to www.maritimeprostocktour.com.
