Irving Blending & Packaging MPST 150, July 24/16

Mother Nature may have put the weekends events at Petty International Raceway on hold, but by the time Sunday rolled around, race fans were treated to an incredible day of racing.

The temperatures were hot and so was the action which kicked off with heat racing. (See what I did there?)

The Parts For Trucks Pro Stock Tour kicked off the afternoon with a trio of qualifiers. 2012 International winner and 2014 Mike Stevens Memorial winner Shawn Turple got the first heat win, giving him the pole for the Irving Blending & Packaging 150. IWK 250 champion Donald Chisholm and defending Mike Stevens Memorial winner Jonathan Hicken also picked up heat wins.

We then moved into Leisure Days RV Bandoleros qualifying with Michael Cormier and Austin MacDonald getting the upper hand on the competition.

For the Mr Transmission Mini Stocks, JR Lawson picked up the win the previous night before the rain came. Tim Webster returned to victory lane like he has done multiple times this season.

For the Extreme Windows & Entrance Systems Street Stocks, Mike Duskey rebounded from a practice wreck the evening before to get the heat win.

We then moved into the Irving Blending & Packaging 150 for the Parts For Trucks Pro Stock Tour. 23 of the best in Atlantic Canada rolled onto the high banks and early on, it looked like Shawn Turple was going to cruise to victory. 21 laps in, Porter's Lake NS driver Cole Butcher rallied to take the top spot and hold off challenges over the course of the event from three-time Atlantic Cat 250 winner Cassius Clark. It would be Butcher's 3rd career win in the Pro Stock ranks. Clark would come home 2nd and following a battle with Turple, Mackinnon and Proude, Dylan Blenkhorn took advantage of contact in front of him to find the final podium position.

Leisure Days RV Bandoleros were out next for their 20 lap feature. Following just a few cautions, it was the “Flying Frenchman” Michael Cormier ending up in Victory Lane once again over Nova Scotia competitors Nathan Blackburn and Sam Rogers. Austin MacDonald and Josh Langille closed out the top 5.

No cautions would fall in the Mr Transmission Mini Stocks. A big field of cars took to the track and in the end, JR Lawson would finally roll through to Victory Lane. Defending track champion Mike Weagle and feature winner 3 times this year Tim Webster would finish off the podium. Chantel Ackles and Logan Power closed out the top 5.

The final feature of the afternoon would also be caution free. It appeared to be Mike Duskey cruising to victory without question, until a last moment bump from Craig Ward nearly relegated the driver to the runner up spot. The Albany, PEI driver would hold on to win his 2nd feature of the season over Ward and Shawn Lewis, who finally broke through to the podium. Chuck Mercer came home 4th in a great run and Gary Wade, making his first start of the season, came home 5th.

The next event for Petty International Raceway is the 4th annual Caleb Dunn Memorial presented by Atlantic Dodge Dealers on Sunday July 31. 4PM will see the green flag drop for the Late Model Sportsman competitors, Extreme Windows & Entrance Systems Street Stocks, Mr Transmission Mini Stocks, Leisure Days RV Bandoleros and the Atlantic Modified Tour.
