52nd River Glade International, Aug. 26/27 2016
Jesse Thompson
Over 50 years ago, Ernie and Winona McLean started a tradition to commemorate the anniversary of the famed River Glade Speedway, dubbing it the International.

This past weekend, the tradition continued with the 52nd running of the River Glade International presented by Jones Auto Body.

Friday night saw the running of the Sportsman portion. A stellar field of 26 competitors rolled through the gates with 25 making it to the main feature. 6-time International winner Frank Fraser was looking to get his first win since 1982. Fraser, along with Marc Williams and Laurie Cormier snagged heat wins to make up the first three spots.

Fraser would spin following a three wide pass on the 2nd lap and made his way to the rear. Meanwhile up front, International winners Russell Smith Jr and Laurie Cormier duked it out for the lead while Luc Bourgeois held strong in the top 5.

Bourgeois would take the top spot with about 40 laps to go and held off furious charges late to finally win his first International over Smith and Fraser who steadily climbed back through the field to grab the final podium position.

In Street Stock action, the "Thrill Maker" Craig Ward and Mike Duskey once again made it 1-2 in a caution free event. It was the 92 rounding off the podium, this time Jeff MacInnis was behind the wheel after buying the car from Shawn Lewis.

Ward and MacInnis grabbed heat wins earlier in the evening.

It was also caution free in the Mini Stock feature as Mike Weagle ran away with the 25 lap feature win. JR Lawson arrived late to the track and was able to finish third to the defending champion. Tim Webster got the runner up spot.

Weagle and Rob Poirier were heat winners.

In the Atlantic Modified Tour, it was Tom Betts winning in dominant fashion. This event also went caution free in its 35 lap run. The top 5 swapped positions "Talladega style" quite a bit, but it was Justin Beers and Doug Matchett making up the podium.

On Saturday, it was the Cummins 150 for the Parts For Trucks Pro Stock Tour. Terrance Bay NS's Craig Slaunwhite looked to get the first back to back International win since Mike Power Jr did it in 2008 and 2009.

Slaunwhite would be able to do so after getting a strong lead over the course of the event. Darren MacKinnon, following a pit stop at about the midway point was able to get 2nd and Cole Butcher, who rallied from a couple of spins late picked up the final podium spot.

The top 3 also were heat winners to kick off the evening.

It was also the first NB visit for the Upper Clements Park Maritime League Of Legends Tour.

It looked to be Cory Hall's race until the leader spun down the front stretch with two to go. This opened the door for Jarrett Butcher, driving Adam Meehan's Strongco #6, to get the victory. Paul Goulden and Justin MacNeil grabbed the final podium spots.

18 cars started the event.

Petty's own Leisure Days RV Bandoleros had a 25 lap feature to begin feature racing on Saturday night. It looked to be Braden Langille's race, until the 51 made a sudden pit stop. This event also went caution free, much like the features the night before.

Michael Cormier rallied from breaking a spindle and hitting the wall in practice to win from a rear of the field starting position. Josh Langille got the runner up spot while Nathan Blackburn, who was doing double duty in Legends, got third.

The next event for Petty International Raceway is the Clear Choice Towing 100 for Late Model Sportsman drivers. We'll also see racing from Bandoleros, Mini Stocks, Street Stocks and the third and final visit for the Women On Wheels division.
